Using a nice mp3 from Death I was able to make some custom ringtones via his music (hope he doesn't mind the free advertising and stuff):



Click on the image to give it a go yourself, I highly recommend it. = )

I use mp3 cutter. Same idea but a small file you can download.

I saw that site on lifehacker Miano, how quick is it?  It just seemed like it would be slow uploading entire mp3s in order to cut them.  I usually just convert said mp3s to wav files and edit them and reencode the ringtone as a 64kbit mono mp3 as my phone has no need for high fidelity stereo sound.

it takes about a minute to upload the mp3, that's the longest part of the whole upload/cut/download process. : )

Kind of easier than converting back and forth, and seemingly easier...it might not be as compact as you might want, but if you have a dock for your phone, it is nice to have both channels there...
