GTX 480 is gettin close

Check it
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/inno3d-geforce-gtx-480-fermi,9872.html.
So do we have any wagers on how much it will run? Can't be too much more than the 5870, since they are about equal in most limited tests I've seen so far (published by Nvidia). The only thing it seems to have over ATI is Tesslation - which no games will have for a bit of time as usual. Hmm - maybe the 5870 will drop in price and I'll snatch one of those instead of my 5770.

I think it's going to be $500 at retail honestly. Nvidia's card will be the fastest single GPU card and they are hoping that people buy it for that, CUDA, and the 3d vision integration. I just bought a ATI 5850 and I am blown away how fast and nice it runs. I was going to wait for Nvidia, but the cheaper scaled down version will be aways out, and I have heard some disheartening rumors of the extremely high power use/heat that the GTX 480 is going to need. I read that a dual GPU card ala the GTX 295 is pretty much ruled out because of it. That means the ATI 5970 is still going to be the fastest card out by a good margin and for not much more cost. All the stuff I read about the new card reminds me of their 5800 FX card: delayed, expensive, hot running, not as fast as it should have been. That gives me hope for their next new card as it will have been tweaked and probably a die shrink to help the power.heat problems.
tl;dr Card will be expensive and hot, go for an ATI or wait for the next Nvidia card.

One thing I haven't been able to determine yet is how well 2x 5770's would scale on my P55 motherboard, since it's Crossfire/SLI lanes are handicapped to 8x vs two 16x lanes in an X58 motherboard. In other words, I can get a second 5770 for a total price little more than one 5850 - I know on an X58 motherboard, two 5770's in CF is faster than a single 5870 at most settings up to 1920x1200 (in 2560x1600 you better be packin a 5970!). So if the 5770's in CF on a P55 is anywhere the scaling on an X58, then twin 5770's would seem to be the way to go IMHO. Any thoughts?

fattuesday, dual 5770s are faster...as long as the game in question does well with crossfire (which is most of them). Also, do you have the 1gb card or the 512mb card, if it's the 512mb card I think you would be limited in what AA and textures settings you can use. My 5850 is blowing me away right now, but my motherboard board supports 2 16x lanes, so I should good to get another one down the road should games start coming out that need it. I regretting not having an SLI capable board before with my 8800gt, I don't think I would ever start with dual gpus. I think of the second video card slot as the ability to cheaply upgrade later.
...back on topic, word on the street is $680 for the GTX 480. It's so high I have a hard time believing it, but we'll see.

Check Tom's Hardware recent system builder articles - their newest March $1,500 build is on a LGA 1366/X58 mobo (i7-920) w/ Crossfire 5850's - your future in glorious benchmarks.
In that article they referenced their December $1,300 build which is my mobo/processor combo - i5-750 and LGA1156/P55 also w/ Crossfire 5850's. The benchmarks where they were able to directly compare the two builds shows me that the FPS hit from going crossfire with only 2 x8 PCIe lanes is not very much at all. Based on that, I think I'm gonna get a 2nd 5770 and set up CF - btw I have the 1 GB 5770 already.
Another note on 5770 x2 is that they are a recommended combo (the 2x 1GB I mean) vs a single 5850 since a pair of my cards are faster. They will draw more power, but nothing too drastic. I'll let you know how that works out.

FROM TOM'S HARDWARE:
"GeForce GTX 480, GTX 470 Prices, Details Leaked?
7:30 PM - March 18, 2010 by Marcus Yam - source: Tom's Hardware US
Web source reveals supposed TDP, SP count, clock speeds and pricing for the upcoming Nvidia "Fermi" graphics cards.
Website VR-Zone claims to have received what are supposedly the final specifications for the upcoming Nvidia GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 GPUs.
The site lists the following information:
GeForce GTX 480 : 480 SP, 700/1401/1848MHz core/shader/mem, 384-bit, 1536MB, 295W TDP, US$499
GeForce GTX 470 : 448 SP, 607/1215/1674MHz core/shader/mem, 320-bit, 1280MB, 225W TDP, US$349
Internal benchmarks reveal that GeForce GTX 470 is some 5-10% faster than Radeon HD 5850 and similiar for GeForce GTX 480 over the Radeon HD 5870. Interestingly, the TDP of GeForce GTX 480 is almost similar to Radeon HD 5970 which is a dual GPU card. Interestingly, our sources revealed that there are indeed plans for dual Fermi cards and the TDP of the card is probably gonna be mind blowing.
UPDATE: Above quoted information has been updated to reflect new information reported by VR-Zone.
Nvidia reminds us once again to stay tuned for the official unveil of the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 on the evening of March 26."
So if you figure the 470 is only 10% faster and is projected at $350 US... remember that the 5850 originally retailed at $250, but went up when they realized it dominated Nvidia's current cards so thoroughly, they had to price it where it belonged in the performance hierarchy... So, I'm guessing we'll see the 5850 back closer to $250 in the near future and they'll have a hard time keeping them in stock again.
Looks like you made the right choice!

5870's are pretty much hanging at $400 as is. You can get a deal here and there, but I agree the release of the 480 will probably lessen the price of the 5870's.
Hopefully Nvidia will be forced to follow suit, at $400 I could talk myself into getting one...not sure about two though...

As I wasn't too familiar with Crossfire vs SLI, I did a bit of surfing last night. From everything I could find on the ATI website and the ATI Wiki, it appears that (unlike SLI) you can Crossfire two different cards within an ATI series. Based on that, I could keep the 5770 I have for now - then when prices on 5850/5870 ultimately drop, slap in one of those to Crossfire with my 5770. So I think that will be the route I'll ultimately go...
I really think Nvidia is missing the boat by not allowing SLI to function unless you get two identical Nvidia cards - most people don't buy two cards at once and when they get the cash (or need) for a second card, they may have a difficult time buying an identical card to pair with the one they already have. After learning about the flexibility of Crossfire, I've suddenly become a bigger fan of ATI!

Yep, that's very true about the non matching of xfire vs identicals.
Performance gains were more consistent in the benchmarks with paired cards in SLI or XFire from what I recall a couple of years ago, not sure if ATi made a big push on correcting that...
