How does this game compare to Demigod which is also dota-like, and the dota community basically said the same thing about?  //fyi, I thought Demigod was pretty awesome

I played very little DoTA, but if you're looking for a DoTA clone then the game you're looking for is Heroes of Newerth, not LoL. That game literally has the heroes copied over from DoTA with new graphics, same items with new names. I've played both HoN and LoL. LoL is a game based on DoTA but it is not a clone. It has completely new heroes, none of them are copies, same with items. It also has a summoner system and masteries (kinda like talents in WoW). Most of the DoTA community (looking for a new game) has moved over to HoN because it literally is exactly the same with awesome graphics. LoL is more user friendly and easier to get into as a new player, anyways if you want to try it out let me know.

As far as Demigod, I haven't played it, but from what I've heard that game has more PVE elements in it than LoL, but is similar.
